Wigan Central

A railway rather than a canal picture. Although Lock 83 in the Wigan flight can be seen, the land in the foreground was occupied by the girder bridge that carried the Great Central branch to Wigan Central, the approach to which was just off picture to the left, until its 1964 closure. Prior to the bridge demolition there were three railways crossing the canal in the space of 400 yards but the LYR and LNWR lines survive.
