Stoke Newington

Stoke Newington station, serving the north London suburb where I was born, looking towards Liverpool Street, on 3rd August 2013. This station was opened by the GER in 1872 as the temporary terminus of the line from Bethnal Green until extended to Lower Edmonton later the same year and where a connection was made with the ex-Eastern Counties Railway branch of 1849 from Angel Road on the Lea Valley Line to Enfield Town. The Stoke Newington route and the Chingford line, plus a reopened Southbury Loop to Cheshunt and on to Bishop's Stortford were belatedly electrified in November 1960. For several years fast Bishop's Stortford commuter trains passed through here non-stop apart from calling at Lower Edmonton (now Edmonton Green) and Seven Sisters from 1968 when it became an interchange with the LU Victoria Line but on electrification of the Lea Valley Line in May 1969, they were switched to that route. From 31st May 2015, the Enfield Town, Chingford and Southbury Loops were transferred to Transport for London as part of London Overground with trains calling at all stations.
