In January 1983, most of the station building at Bentley remained despite closure to passengers 17 years earlier. However, except for the southern end, which gleamed with fresh paint, it had become very dilapidated. The pristine portion contained facilities for the keeper of the still active level crossing, whose cabin can be seen on the right. Conversion of the crossing to automatic barriers in the year ahead resulted in a total demolition of the station building in 1984, adding weight to the railway adage of the time that a visit from the painters is never a good sign.
