Bathgate Upper: Having taken water at the closed Bathgate Upper station, J36 65243 'Maude' sets off towards Bathgate yard with a trainload of coal from a local colliery. Remarkable that this veteran was still in service in January 1965 when many much younger locos, including BR Standard classes, had been withdrawn.
Bathgate Central Junction: Winter sunlight catches J36 65243 'Maude', approaching the signalbox for Bathgate Yard, with a trainload of coal from a local colliery on 8th January 1965.
Bathgate Yard: Meeting of young and old in Bathgate yard in 1965, between the relatively modern Standard Class 2 78050, less than ten years old, and the venerable ex-NB J36 65243 Maude, by then more than seventy.
Bathgate Yard: The substantial yard at Bathgate was still busy with coal traffic in 1965, with four ex-NB J36 0-6-0 locomotives amongst those seen in action on the day of this January visit. 65297 was pictured ready to leave the yard with a rake of empties for one of the local collieries

Bathgate Upper: In January 1965, J36 0-6-0 65243 'Maude' pauses for water from the column at the closed Bathgate Upper station, whilst on the way to the nearby marshalling yard with a load of coal from a local colliery. Although some fifty years old, the locomotive remained hard at work in the Bathgate area, along with several other members of the class. Note that a snowplough was fitted for possible wintry weather.
Riddings Junction: A track panel, located at the meeting point of the Midland and Scottish regions of BR, is lifted from the up line near Riddings Junction on 8 January 1969, marking the end of the Waverley route as a through main line linking Carlisle and Edinburgh. The lifting 'ceremony' had been arranged by BR following a media call, presumably to emphasise the point that their battle to close the line had finally been won. Nearest the camera is local man Willie Whittaker, doubtless feeling more than a tinge of sadness as he observes the proceedings, hand on hip. The hand would likely be transferred from hip to pint pot that night in The Riverside back in Canonbie. Bentley [EUR]: In January 1983, most of the station building at Bentley remained despite closure to passengers 17 years earlier. However, except for the southern end, which gleamed with fresh paint, it had become very dilapidated. The pristine portion contained facilities for the keeper of the still active level crossing, whose cabin can be seen on the right. Conversion of the crossing to automatic barriers in the year ahead resulted in a total demolition of the station building in 1984, adding weight to the railway adage of the time that a visit from the painters is never a good sign.

Morecambe Junction: The points have been changed and DRS 57003 is just about to set off along the Heysham Branch on 8 January as 156454 passes on a Morecambe to Lancaster service. Moments later the junction disappeared from view briefly when a cloud of blue smoke erupted from the Class 57 as it moved off.

Dane Road: The first of quite a few. Metrolink 3001 calls at Dane Road with an evening service from Altrincham to Cornbrook. Dane Rd opened in 1931 when the MSJ&A was electrified. The M5000 fleet of trams was steadily expanded from its introduction in 2009 until, with the final 2016 delivery, it numbers 120 sets.

Kilmaurs: 156513 works the 1A17 Kilmarnock to Glasgow Central service in very wintry conditions through Kilmaurs on 8 January 2016. This service has since been temporarily suspended and replaced by Virgin Voyagers until the bridge over the Clyde at Lamington is reopened in February.
Gorebridge: The 0945 (Sunday) ex-Tweedbank ready to leave Gorebridge on 8 January 2017 on its way to Edinburgh Waverley. Note the sizeable housing development that now occupies the area to the south of Lady Brae, from which there is a direct entrance to the station see image [[51910]].
Bury Bolton Street: A very welcome return - 60103 'Flying Scotsman' at Bury Bolton Street on the East Lancashire Railway prior to it's first public test run to Heywood following its lengthy restoration at Ian Riley Engineering. Mr Riley's Black 5 45407 was coupled inside the train in support.
Hawick [2nd]: Recently I was speaking with Kenneth Gray, he expressed surprise at a street in Hawick - Back Railway. I decided to investigate this long-gone street. From the book by W S Robson published 1947: 'BACK RAILWAY (MANSFIELD) After a railway siding now dismantled.' Now known as Mansfield Square/Mansfield Park the siding would be down the street - to presumably supply coal to Riversdale Mills or to Eastfield Mills.
Hawick [2nd]: This shows, I think, the formation of the track siding sloping down from the mainline to the Gasworks - and no doubt - this siding in the street, which would require a reversal.
Hawick [2nd]: From the site of the gasworks sidings I turned left (north-west) at the rugby roundabout and headed on to the path to the walk. This underpass is quite visible from the road. I would have taken it but there are steps involved and I was pushing a 15 week child in a buggy!
Hawick [2nd]: The only real evidence - a signal wire support - of the railway. (I’d like to say that you can imagine the solum of the siding below the banking.)
Hawick [2nd]: Found during a visit to Burnfoot cemetery.
'Sacred to the memory of John Turnbull Spiers who was accidentally killed at Newcastle-on-Tyne Central Railway Station 10th September 1912 Aged 68 years and in the 50th year of his service with the N.B.R. Company.'
The headstone also recalls his wife Janet and daughter Martha.
John Messner, Glasgow Riverside Museum, has sent me newspaper extracts from the Hawick News and Border Chronicle 13 September 1912 from which we learn
' ... Mr Spiers left as usual from Hawick to Newcastle on Tuesday morning. The accident happened just before starting from Newcastle to Hawick on the return journey in the forenoon. Deceased left his engine to go to the platform, and was in the act of returning when he was run down by an engine and carriages coming in an opposite direction. Death was instantaneous. Mr Spiers was a well known and highly esteemed townsman, and was one of the oldest engine drivers in the service of the N. B. Railway. He was a native of Nettleflat, parish of Heriot; and had he lived till next April he would have completed fifty years service on an engine, for forty six of which he had been engine driver. He had run the train between Hawick and Newcastle for over thirty years, and his ability as a driver is borne ample testimony to in the fact he had never made a mistake or accident worth mentioning. The total mileage of his railway journeys will be between two and three million miles, the longest journey which he has performed on his engine in one day being 300 miles ... '
His death was also recorded in the Southern Reporter of the 12th.
Gorebridge: An Edinburgh bound train on the Borders Railway heads towards the Gore Glen shortly after restarting from Gorebridge and passing below Station Road on 8 January 2017.
Brackenhills: The Giffen - Kilbirnie branch of the Lanarkshire and Ayrshire Railway is completely obliterated beyond the abutments of this difficult to access bridge crossing the Powgree Burn just to the west of Brackenhills station. The Kilbirnie Branch was built using part of the solum of the former Barkip Railway, which had been associated with the Glengarnock Iron Works.
Shettleston: 320313 draws in to Shettleston with a mid afternoon Balloch - Airdrie Service on a cold but sunny 8th January 2018.
Didcot Parkway: A strange visitor to Didcot on the 8th January 2018. I have no idea where it was going to or coming from. Any further information would be welcome.
Gorgie Cattle Market [CR]: The Caley's Gorgie Cattle market branch was better placed than the NB's and directly accessed the main line. Despite this it was more modest affair with no fan of sidings or cattle pens. Here is the site in January 2019, looking towards the buffers.
Aberdour: 158739, a little to the west of Aberdour with the 12.08 from Arbroath to Edinburgh Waverley on 8th January 2018. The minor road leads to Otterston Loch.
Haymarket: The 0800 Glasgow-Plymouth meets the 0852 Edinburgh-Euston at Haymarket on 8th January 2018. These Voyagers will both route through Birmingham New St but reach it via the different routes. Cross-Country via the East Coast and Virgin via the West Coast routes.
Lancaster: Tree and vegetation clearance is opening up the cutting to the south of Lancaster Castle station. A TPE EMU heading for Manchester Airport accelerates up the bank after the Lancaster stop on 8th January 2019. See image [[48224]] for the previous appearance of this location.
Yoker Depot: Two former Virgin MkIII buffet coaches at Yoker Depot in January 2019. They have been used for fire safety training.
Aberdour: 43062 John Armitt drops towards Aberdour leading an Edinburgh - Aberdeen and return Network Rail working on 8th January 2019. Vegetation clearance has opened up the view at this location.
Slateford: A Glasgow-bound service passes an Edinburgh one at Slateford on 8 January 2019. The 1960s Slateford Junction can be seen just behind the Glasgow train. The original one, from Edinburgh Princes Street days, was a little further back.
Bonnington South Junction: There are plans to convert the disused Powderhall branch to a cycle path (to connect with the rest of the former Granton Harbour line) but for now the rails remain in place. The buffers are just behind me and this was the site of the junction for North Leith. The view is south towards the Powderhall compactor plant - currently being demolished - and the city. [Ref query 14 January 2019]
Kilpatrick: Kilpatrick looking good with new planters and windows restored for the building's new use as an office.
Lancaster: A bright day in Lancaster but the low winter sun leaves the cutting in shade as 90046 and 90049 drop down the bank towards the station with a Daventry to Coatbridge intermodal service. 8th January 2019.
Ormskirk: Merseyrail 507029 waits at Ormskirk for the booked departure time of 2107hrs for a service to Liverpool Central on 8th January 2020. This is the south end of the single platform face at Ormskirk however beyond the buffer stops the Northern trains arrive on the services from and to Preston.
Heysham Power Station: 88004 'Pandora' and 68033 'Courageous' pause on the short power station branch at Heysham waiting for the level crossing gates on the ferry terminal road to be opened for them. The two locos had travelled light engine from Sellafield to collect a return flask load on 8th January 2020.
Heysham Port: The road bridge at Heysham, which carries the access roads to the power stations and ferry terminal, is being refurbished and is covered in scaffolding. 68033, and 88004, are entering the power station branch light engine to collect a load for Sellafield on 8th January 2020. The guard is operating the ground frame as the locos draw forward.
Dunbar: I don't know about yours but my camera battery goes from 3 bars to 'Not playing' in about a shutter speed, so this phoneshot will have to do. A Penzance service pulls out of Dunbar on 8 January 2020; a new viewpoint from a new platform. The 'old' platform line continues to be bidirectional so ScotRail services change ends there leaving the main lines clear in the meantime.
Ormskirk: The Northern service from Preston has just terminated at Ormskirk on 8th January 2020 and after the crew had changed ends, returned to Preston. At the other end of the platform a Merseyrail EMU waits to depart to Liverpool Central.
Pilton Junction West: This picture serves as a 'now' to Bill Roberton's 'then' of 1980 (see image [[75406]]). The Granton Gasworks station building, hardly changed, serves as a point of reference even if today it has the awning of a Morrison's petrol station in front of it. Apart from that, the immediate area remains undeveloped.
Daisy Hill: 158870 and 150105 arrive at Daisy Hill with a Kirkby to Blackburn service on 8 January 2022.
Wigan North Western: 769448 passes Wigan North Western on the line from Hindley to Wigan Wallgate with a service to Southport in January 2022. The Class 769 is running on the diesel engines that were fitted during conversion from Class 319, although it would have used the 25kV overheads between Manchester and Bolton.
Swinton [L and Y]: 158870 and 150105 depart at Swinton with a Kirkby to Blackburn service on 8 January 2022.
Hag Fold: 158756 arrives at Hag Fold with a Leeds to Wigan North Western service on 08 January 2022. Hag Fold is a fairly recent station having been constructed in 1987 however it lacks the feature of the original L&Y stations on the Atherton line, an island platform. The platform the train is arriving at has been built on the former Up Fast line with the former Down Fast further to the right.
Wigan North Western: Northern 195107 waits in platform 3 at Wigan North Western to start its journey to Leeds via the Atherton line and Calder Valley in January 2022. The track in the former platform 2 is still in place although disconnected and the overhead wire has also been removed.
Wigan North Western: The 4L10 Coatbridge to Tilbury container train passes Wigan North Western on 8 January 2022. 88005 is seen with a lot of empty slots behind the loco, but there were five containers on the back. On the right 158905 waits in the bay platform 3 with a service to Leeds. Compare with a container service passing this location in 1974, see image [[13346]]

2001 | ^Borderer Express^; Proposed enhancements toTrans-Pennine rail franchise | Dumfries and Galloway Council have proposed creation of two new Trans-Pennine Inter City rail routes to link: Leeds with Glasgow (via Carlisle, Dumfries and Kilmarnock) Middlesbrough with Belfast (via Newcastle, Carlisle, Prestwick Airport and the Stena Line HSS high speed ferry service from Stranraer). This would, in effect create a Trans-Pennine "Borderer Express" providing a new Inter City service between Northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. These proposals are purely a suggested extension of the new Trans-Pennine franchise seen as additional to existing local services and, more importantly, that, whilst the two proposed express routes could form a natural extension to the new Trans-Pennine franchise, their geographical position and cross-border nature could fit equally into an extended ScotRail franchise or a new Northern England Franchise express service. A further reduction in the number of Trans-Pennine bidders to just 2 companies is expected this month with the SRA expeected to announce the successful bidders by Easter. |

Low-speed test runs begin later along the East Lancashire Railway (ELR). Andrew McLean, NRM head curator, said: ^From the dead it becomes something living and breathing again.^ The first test-run will see the engine move out of its shed and travel a short distance down the track to the heritage line^s Bolton Street station. It marks the end of a £4.2m restoration project, which was begun in 2006 by specialist engineers at Riley and Son Ltd, based in Bury. |

The project will see the main entrance at George Square replaced by a huge glass façade with a new ticket office and longer platforms. The redevelopment, which was complicated by a planned extension of the adjacent Buchanan Galleries shopping centre being shelved in 2015, is expected to be completed by 2019.
