Wakefield Westgate: View south from the new footbridge at the north end of Wakefield Westgate on 9 January 2014, showing canopy and platform construction works still in progress. The original steam era footbridge at the south end is now blocked out of use, and will no doubt be removed in due course. There were originally two centre through roads, but as can be seen the up one was removed to allow erection of overhead line supports. Over to the right can be seen the former bays that supported local services to Bradford via Ossett & Dewsbury and to Castleford via Outwood and Stanley.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach: The view northwards from Blackpool Pleasure Beach station on 9th January 2018, during the electrification closure of the Blackpool lines. A new colour light (protecting the buffers at Blackpool South) has appeared at the lineside, and presumably the old fixed distant board it replaces will be removed in due course. It appears a number of signals are being installed on this line (that has been one train only working for many years). This may now allow some flexible turn back working, which would assist events such as the Open Golf Championships at Ansdell & Fairhaven.

Murrayfield: It's always satisfying to come across a bit of left-behind hardware on a railway path, in this case a CR signal post base. OS maps confirm that there was indeed an 'SP' here, a little to the north of Murrayfield station. It would have been an advanced starter, if I understand these things.

Lancaster: Sunday strollers on the canal towpath as Rail Operations Group 37800 passes Lancaster, taking Orion EPU 326001 from Mossend to Northampton on 9th January 2022. These repurposed Class 319 units saw regular use between Shieldmuir and Willesden in December 2021 and this has continued in the new year but all workings appear to have been diesel hauled. YearCompaniesDescription
2001Maxwelltown branch to re-open in 2002Rail traffic is set to return to the Maxwelltown branch line from 2002, thanks to the award of a Rail Freight Facilities Grant by the Scottish Executive. The £10m grant will enable BP to move oil by rail from its Grangemouth refinery to distribution depots throughout Scotland and Cumbria, including to its Maxwelltown distribution depot in Dumfries. This shift from road to rail will eventually remove 542 lorry journeys a year from the region^s road network and significantly reduce the number of tanker lorry movements in and around the Maxwelltown oil terminal. Toby Rackliff, the Council^s Railway Development Officer, welcomed the news "Dumfries and Galloway Council has campaigned long and hard for the restoration of rail freight services to the Maxwelltown branch line. The Scottish Executive^s freight facilities grant award will remove a significant amount of traffic off Scotland^s road network and we^re hopeful it will also mark the beginning of a rail freight renaissance in the area". £90,000 of the grant has been earmarked specifically for work to renovate the rail access to the Maxwelltown depot, which has suffered from several years of neglect. It is hoped that this work will enable 15,000 tonnes of oil a year to be delivered to the depot, with the oil trains commencing operation within the next two years.
2002New conveyor at Thornton Yard"In recent weeks work has been undertaken to install what looks (at a distance) like a conveyer system over the line at Thornton Yard. This is probably to carry coal over the line for MGR loading from a new open-cast site nearby. So far nothing has been actually been lifted over the line, but it looks to me like it ought to be soon. How the coal is to be handled at the Thornton Yard end is a mystery however as the conveyer is not being put in opposite any of the current sidings, but is more or less opposite the depot!"
