The 3ft gauge line, from Cork Western Road station to the terminus at Blarney, opened in 1887. Additional branches to Coachford and Donoughmore opened in 1888 and 1893 respectively. A key purpose of the Blarney line was to exploit the tourist traffic to nearby Blarney Castle. However, having three branches no doubt contributed to the system's lack of economic viability, although it was also significantly damaged in the Civil War. The system closed on 29th December 1934. However, Blarney station survives in very good condition as a tourist souvenir shop adjacent to the entrance to the car park for the Castle and grounds. 28th September 2019.
