Haydock Branch Junction

This remnant of the St. Helens Central branch survives in 2021 as a headshunt for trains to reverse into Edge Green stone terminal. This view looks towards Haydock and St. Helens with the terminal entrance and link to the WCML behind the camera. Although regular passenger services ceased in 1952 the nearby Haydock Park Racecourse station continued to receive special trains until 1963. Goods services ran through to St Helens Central until 1965 when they were cut back to Ashton-in-Makerfield. That section continued in use until as late as 1989 before closure. The last trains to use it carried bitumen, traffic that now runs to Preston Dock, and just this stub now remains.
