Easthouses Extension Pit

View north towards the site of Easthouses Pit on 15 April 2021, with Broadhurst Road on the right. The wide grassy area once accommodated the original Newbattle Collieries mineral line (to the left) as well as the later Easthouses Tramway. Opened in 1909 as a cable hauled system, the tramway ran in a cutting passing below the camera. The footbridge that once spanned the cutting at this point has been replaced by a path marked by the metal guide rail in the foreground. The mineral line crossed Mayfield Road by way of a level crossing located just beyond the white building (the much later Sunflower Chinese Takeaway) while the tramway continued straight ahead passing below the same road (now the B6482). The pickup truck in the background is about to cross the old trackbed (for a closeup see image 75121)).
