Hindley and Blackrod Branch Junction

This bridge (SD 635066) is on the 1889 direct route from Hindley and Blackrod Branch Junction to Dobb Brow Junction on the Atherton line. See map 76558. The latter created a fast route out of Manchester to Liverpool and this short line, joining the older line to Blackrod, allowed L&YR expresses to Blackpool or further north to bypass Bolton. Twenty years younger than a nearby bridge on the curve to Hindley this is made of blue rather than red brick and has a flat girder deck rather than a brick arch. However, in 2021 it is looking very tired. Much of the trackbed south of here towards Dobbs Brow was in cuttings and long sections have been filled in.
