Amongst improvements made by the Lothian Coal Company during development of the Lady Victoria cmplex was the construction of extensive rail facilities alongside the main line. This enabled closure of the sidings previously used by the Newbattle Collieries, which were located in a cramped yard at the south end of Newbattle Viaduct. The yard was abandoned prior to World War 1, with all traffic moving to the new site. This is the old yard more than a century later on a damp May morning in 2021. Running behind the fence on the left is the Borders Railway (see 71036), with the B6482 Dalhousie Road passing to the right. Just beyond the point where the fences meet is the south end of Newbattle Viaduct.
