Kinlochleven Aluminium Smelter

The British Aluminium Co. (or North British Aluminium Co.) built the Kinlochleven Alumimium Works between 1905 and 1909, using narrow gauge railways to aid in the construction of the factory, power station, Blackwater Dam and the connecting water pipes. After opening, a 3 foot gauge tramway connected the works to piers on Loch Leven for the import and export of materials. This was double track with overhead catenary. It closed in 1960 with the works following forty years later. This view looks east over the cleared site of the aluminium works to the still-active power station. Behind it are the water pipes from Blackwater Reservoir - one of them has sprung a leak! To the left of the pipes, a railway and aerial ropeway reached the dam.
