Freight traffic to Dereham and beyond continued via the down connection until 1989 and it was subsequently maintained in use for the Mid Norfolk railway. Neustadt (Sachsen): The Romanian built C-C diesel hydraulics of DR class 119 were never famed for their reliability and despite significant expenditure on the class by DB following German reunification (by which time they had become class 219) they did not survive long, with many of their duties being taken over by multiple units. A pocket of the class survived in the extreme south-east of the former DDR into the 21st century and here No. 219067 has recently arrived at Neustadt (Sachsen) in June 2001 on the 07.10 local train (No. RB17914) from Pirna.

Kinlochleven Aluminium Smelter: The British Aluminium Co. (or North British Aluminium Co.) built the Kinlochleven Alumimium Works between 1905 and 1909, using narrow gauge railways to aid in the construction of the factory, power station, Blackwater Dam and the connecting water pipes. After opening, a 3 foot gauge tramway connected the works to piers on Loch Leven for the import and export of materials. This was double track with overhead catenary. It closed in 1960 with the works following forty years later. This view looks east over the cleared site of the aluminium works to the still-active power station. Kinlochleven Smelter Pier: The British Aluminium Co. This is the south pier on Loch Leven, partially demolished, in June 2021. The isolated section carried rail mounted travelling cranes.

Beeches Light Railway: Sadly, as of 13th December, you wont get Adrian Shooter on any phone. Apparently he could set challenging assignments; but was a great manager most of the time, and transformed Chiltern from a backwater to a premier league railway. I only met him twice; but found him to be genial, supportive, and hospitable.

Abingdon: It is over 40 years since the MG car factory at Abingdon closed. This railway branch line - seen approaching Crabtree Place near the station site, which is now a Waitrose supermarket and car park - carried thousands of cars out for export. Now it is a peaceful footpath and cyclepath, for those who prefer its old fashioned charm to the springy tarmac path to the left in this view.

Beeches Light Railway: A Branch Line Society visit in June 2022 allowed me to inspect this impressive garden railway at the home of Adrian Shooter. The blue engine is Sharp, Stewart and Company #3518 of 1889, rebuilt at Tindharia Works in 1908. They obviously did a good job, because the next rebuild (at Tyseley) was in 2004. The green engine is called 'Minas de Aller', and was built by L.Corpet in Paris, #439 of 1884. Theres a Simplex behind the green engine.
