Opened in July 1976, the mile long narrow gauge Wells Harbour Railway set up by Roy Francis remained a popular visitor attraction each holiday season for 45 years. It provided a genuine passenger service in that it helped transport young children and the elderly over most of the long distance from the town to the beach. In September 2021, and to widespread dismay, it was closed down and then lifted two months later. This photo shows the Wells town terminus in July 1987 with steam loco Edmund Hannay arriving. The fares at that time were 30p adult, 20p child.
