Slough

The main building of the second station at Slough, on the south side westbound platform, seen from The Railway Touring Company's Flying Scotsman excursion from Paddington to Worcester Shrub Hill making its first stop to pick up additional passengers, at 07.39 on Saturday, 5th March 2022. This is on the first section of Brunel's Great Western Railway (originally broad gauge) that had opened between the first station at Paddington (replaced by the present in 1854) and Maidenhead on 4th June 1838. Although trains called here from the outset, there was no station at Slough until 1st June 1840; for the first two years tickets were sold at the nearby Crown Inn. In 1842, Queen Victoria made her first ever train journey from London to Slough. The present station was opened on 8th September 1884, slightly east of the 1840 station, long after the line had been converted to standard gauge.
