Woolfold: There are two months to go before the end of passenger services to Holcombe Brook. Woolfold signal box is evidently switched out as L&YR 2-4-2T 50731 propels its single coach away from Woolfold station (SD 789121) and onto the viaduct as it heads for Bury. Lickey Incline: 14 bogie oil tanks, presumably empty, are hauled up the 1:37 Lickey Incline without banking assistance, and the double headed Brush Type 2s sounded tremendous. Leading loco 31130 is now preserved on the Battlefield Railway but 31141 was withdrawn in 1989 and cut up the same year at M C Metals, Glasgow.

Newbattle Viaduct: The 23-arch Newbattle Viaduct, looking north in March 2011. Destinations on the sign once applied to both road and rail routes. The structure must hold a record for the number of names by which it has become known over the 164 years since it was built. Nuneaton: Passengers on Pathfinder's Norfolk Broadsman were delighted when 20.309 and 308 (tailed by 37.667) turned up on platform 5 at Nuneaton on Saturday 5th March. Not so much because of the shorter walk over the bridge, more because this meant the train would use the new crossover from the WCML to the Leicester line.

Kinghorn: 170 458 leaving Kinghorn on 5 March with a service to, unusually, Dunfermline Town due to a diversion caused by weekend engineering works.  At least passengers on Platform 1 would have been aware in advance where this train was heading: a Customer Information Screen has just been installed there, 4 years after one was installed on Platform 2.  NR and FSR waiting on each other, apparently: though that was in 2008!

Inverkeithing South Junction: The Forth Bridge Line is closed for two weekends for increasingly frequent engineering work on this line.  Closure used to be a rarity, but it is only a matter of months since the last one.  All is quiet on the rails while passengers at Inverkeithing (behind camera) are pointed in the direction of replacement buses.  Notice the just-installed palisade fencing and gate across the Rosyth Dockyard branch to keep strollers out: there's a foot crossing here so access was otherwise easy.  The crossing is needed to provide access to the station from one of three station car parks.  Photographed 5 March 2011.  For this area over 50 years ago see image [[19632]].

Bonnyrigg: A jogger runs through platform 1 at Bonnyrigg station (closed 1962) heading towards Hardengreen Junction. The former station on the Peebles Loop is now part of a walkway/cycleway (or runway in this case?). View north east towards the B704 on 5 March 2011.

Bonnyrigg: The former Bonnyrigg station closed to passengers in 1962. The area has since been landscaped and now forms part of the Penicuik - Dalkeith Walkway. View is north east along the down platform on 5 March 2011 in the general direction of Eskbank. The line ran straight ahead over a level crossing on Cockpen Road and through the site now occupied by the houses directly opposite, with those to the right built on the old goods yard. As a result, the walkway deviates slightly east at the crossing to run along the road between the houses (named Waverley Court) before rejoining the original route 250 yards further on.

Wymondham Abbey: I'm sure that tree wasn't there when I got here.. the driver of 37219 shows a lot of patience as he waits for the crossing gates to be opened so that he can pick up some track panels, leaving 47.580 to haul the 16.15 back to Dereham. The MNR's locos are very well turned out.

Dunfermline Town: 'The King sits in Dunfermline Town, drinking the blude-red wine' goes the anonymous ballad 'Sir Patrick Spens'.  There's no suggestion that anyone would be seen drinking wine of any colour in this Dunfermline Town.  I have to report though that an empty bottle of a proprietary potent tonic wine was seen in the undergrowth nearby.  Tsk.  The smell of lorne sausage, another inexplicable Scottish favourite, usually fills the ticket office here, but the kiosk is not yet open on the morning of 5 March.

This station, where the original atmospheric wooden platform buildings and canopies were torn down in the 1970s and replaced by draughty bus-stop style shelters, was opened as Leyton by the Tottenham & Forest Gate Railway, which linked the Tottenham & Hampstead Junction Railway at South Tottenham with the London, Tilbury & Southend Railway at Woodgrange Park, on 9th July 1894. The suffix Midland Road was added post-nationalisation by BR Eastern Region in 1949. The scene here is now very different with masts and overhead wires in place. Brackmills Level Crossing: Looking the other way from see image [[34291]] towards Northampton, the railway is clearly not ready for use any time soon. The level crossing has been removed, but there are still rails on this side. Updated November 2019: there are now 14,000 people working on the Brackmills industrial estate. In a masterpiece of planning, they all start and finish at the same times - it can take a car driver an hour just to get off the estate. A number of solutions to this problem are being considered - all based on unrestricted and exclusive use of cars. A shame, really.

Worcester Foregate Street: 166210 at Worcester Foregate Street, waiting to take up a service to Westbury on the afternoon of Saturday, 5th March 2022. After exploring the city and visiting the Cathedral, I decided on a quick ride back to Shrub Hill rather than walking. (This wasn't part of the Railway Touring Company's Flying Scotsman excursion on which I had arrived at Shrub Hill from Paddington at lunchtime. Worcester Shrub Hill: With the crowd jostling each other to take a photo or two (or even more), Flying Scotsman has returned from the siding and come to a stop at platform 1 at Worcester Shrub Hill, in readiness for the 16.36 return departure to Paddington (via Cheltenham Spa, Stroud, Kemble and Swindon, rejoining the outward route via Oxford and Evesham at Didcot Parkway), on Saturday, 5th March 2022. This is on the first section of Brunel's Great Western Railway (originally broad gauge) that had opened between the first station at Paddington (replaced by the present in 1854) and Maidenhead on 4th June 1838. Although trains called here from the outset, there was no station at Slough until 1st June 1840; for the first two years tickets were sold at the nearby Crown Inn. In 1842, Queen Victoria made her first ever train journey from London to Slough. The present station was opened on 8th September 1884, slightly east of the 1840 station, long after the line had been converted to standard gauge.

2008Rail bosses in bid to buy up unused tracks [Evening News]Hopes have been raised that two stretches of disused train track put up for sale have now been secured for the future development of Edinburgh^s rail network. A section of disused railway land at Abbeyhill and a former brewery railway siding at Haymarket Station were put on the market by the property arm of the now defunct British Rail last year, sparking fears that developers would snap up the land. 2012Waverley escalators flawed [Herald]NETWORK Rail has admitted the IT system that runs one of the key facets of the multi-million pound overhaul of Waverley Station is so ridden with faults it is being replaced entirely. Since the £7million project ended in January, at least one escalator has been out of order each day. Six escalators were built as part of a £7million project to overhaul the historic Waverley Steps entrance on the north side of the Edinburgh station but have seen barely a day go by without one of them being out of order since opening to the public on January 30. Network Rail, which owns and manages the station and has overseen the development project, has blamed a software glitch for repeated breakdowns of escalators installed at Edinburgh^s Waverley Station just over a month ago.
2012Network Rail^s £5m to upgrade level crossings in Morecambe [BBC News]Network Rail has announced plans to spend £5m upgrading and renewing three level crossings in the Morecambe area. 2012Joy for rail travellers as transport minister promises Glasgow^s 9 ^at risk^ stations will not shut [Evening Times]NINE Glasgow train stations have been saved from closure after Scottish Transport Minister Keith Brown finally gave an absolute assurance today that none will shut. Mr Brown visited stations in the city today, where he confirmed all those named as being at risk would remain open. The news means tens of thousands of passengers will have their local station protected, following an Evening Times-led campaign against the potential closures. Transport Scotland officials had included an option in a consultation on the future of railways in Scotland that, if accepted by the Scottish Government, would have seen stations within a mile of another similar station shut. The Evening Times launched the Save Our Stations campaign after we revealed a document said there was 11 in the Greater Glasgow area, including nine in the city that, if closed, would save £208,000 a year. I am delighted to confirm no stations in Glasgow will be closing We are looking at ways to support the development of new stations Glasgow stations on the list that are now saved are: Ashfield, Barnhill, Duke Street, Gilshochill, Kelvindale, Kennishead Maryhill, Mosspark and Nitshill. Also saved are Paisley St James, Airbles, near Motherwell, Ardrossan Town and two in the far north. Mr Brown has now finally ruled out any closures as a result of the Rail 2014 consultation. His promise came after our campaign was backed by a wide range of people of all political parties.
2013Borders rail link could cut 530,000 road trips [Scotsman] THE new Borders rail line is set to cut car journey numbers by more than half-a-million every year, according to a new report. The latest analysis of the business case for the £300 million project to reopen the Waverley route from Edinburgh to Tweedbank, near Galashiels, calculated the rail link will boost tourism and cut road accidents due to fewer car journeys.
2015Harbury landslip line to reopen three weeks early [Rail News]NETWORK RAIL has revealed that the Harbury Tunnel landslip between Leamington Spa and Banbury will have been stablised and cleared by 13 March, which is three weeks earlier than originally expected. The route between Birmingham and London Marylebone, the Thames Valley, the south coast and the port of Southampton is used by 130 passenger and freight trains a day. It has been closed since 31 January after a 350,000 tonne landslip threatened to block the line. The steeply-sided cutting had posed problems before. [From Richard Buckby]
2015First 319s run on Northern route [Rail News]THE first electric trains cascaded from Thameslink went into service with Northern this morning. The start was three days later than planned, because inspectors from the ORR are understood to have voiced last-minute concerns about some aspects of the overhead line equipment. However, the green light was given for the launch of public services after successful test runs. Eight electric services a day will run between Manchester and Liverpool via Newton-le-Willows. 2016Somerset and Dorset Railway closure marked 50 years on [BBC News]The 50th anniversary of the closing of the Somerset and Dorset Railway is being marked over the weekend. On 5 March 1966 a coffin with the words ^S&D died today^ was loaded on to the very last train in a mock funeral to mark the service^s demise. At its height, the line linked places like Bridgwater, Burnham-on-Sea, Wells, Bath and Glastonbury. But Michael Eavis, Glastonbury founder, said it would be ^impossible^ to have a ^train coming through the site now^. The S&D, as it was known, was created in 1862 when two railways - Somerset Central Railway and Dorset Central Railway - merged to create a coast-to-coast line from Burnham-on-Sea to Poole.
