Hawick North Signal Box: Haymarket BRCW Type 2 D5306 takes a northbound freight away from Hawick on 6 March 1969.
Norton Bridge: 25158 runs south through Norton Bridge with a short freight from the Stoke line in 1980. This view was taken from the north end of the platform at a station that was only officially closed in 2017 but hadn't seen a train call for many years before that. The Class 25 had a further three years service left before being withdrawn from Crewe Diesel Depot in 1983. It was cut up at Vic Berry's in Leicester in 1987.
Leven Shipyard Junction: 1/4 MP sign. Triangular metal plate with bolt projections top and bottom and low relief numerals 1/4 of black figures on white. Found on timber post lying at foot of embankment of L&D line at jct with Castlegreen sidings.
Bellgrove Junction: The aftermath of the Bellgrove crash in 1989. Two 303s met in a head on collision on the single lead from Bellgrove Junction. One driver and one passenger were killed. The Springburn bound train is to the left and that from Springburn underneath and to the right. The Airdrie line is in the foreground. See image [[33386]]
Regensburg: USSR built class 232 Co-Co diesel-electric locomotives 232 425 and 232 241 passing through Regensburg Hbf with a single bogie van in departmental use on 6th March 2002.
Stobs: View south on the Waverley line at the site of Stobs Camp Siding which was actually a large yard extending to the access road to Acreknowe farm. From there a tramway crossed the road, and abrubtly dog-legged before eventually reaching Stobs military camp. A spur served the camp bakery and the line ended near one of three YMCA Institute buildings, on the west flank of the camp, roughly level with Winningtonrigg. To the left in this picture can be seen the railway cottages just north of Barnes viaduct. Where the route begins to turn was the location of the large signalbox here. Behind the camera a long headshunt on the up side extended to Colislinn cutting.
Stobs: Colislinn, just south of Flex, a little to the north of Stobs, an overbridge still carries evidence of trains working up the gradient from Hawick to Whitrope summit in the form of blackening. View looks north.

Edinburgh Park: Platform view west at Edinburgh Park station in March 2006.
Dundee Esplanade: Dundee Esplanade station, now much modified and used as the maintenance control centre for the Tay Bridge. View north in March 2007 as a southbound HST runs through the wooden platforms heading onto the bridge.
Auchtermuchty: Auchtermuchty in March 2007 - some 57 years after closure. The buildings have recently changed hands, with the Sterling brand replacing that of Rippin Structures and the former offices now used for general storage. The station clock and bench have gone.
Dundee Esplanade: The 0955 GNER Aberdeen - Kings Cross HST on the climb from Dundee up to the Tay Bridge about to pass through the former Esplanade station on 6 March 2007. The steps up to platform level are behind the gate on the left of the picture.
Camperdown Junction: A southbound train on the approach to Dundee about to pass over Camperdown level crossing on 6 March 2007.
Camperdown Junction: Northbound train on Camperdown level crossing, Dundee in March 2007.
Dundee: Never fails does it? Nothing happening, so, back to the car, pour a coffee, bite on a sandwich and... EWS 67025 just captured passing the car park eastbound with a trainload of pipes on the approach to Dundee, March 2007.
Tay Bridge: A southbound HST heads out onto the Tay Bridge on 6 March past ongoing work on the 3 year maintenance and refurbishment programme announced in September 2006.
Tay Bridge: Southbound HST crossing the A85 Riverside Drive in March 2007 as it runs out onto the Tay Bridge.
Dollar: Approaching the abandoned platform at Dollar along the former Devon Valley route from Alloa on 6 March 2008. The station closed to passengers in 1964 and this section of the old trackbed subsequently became part of 'The Devon Way'. View is north east in the general direction of Rumbling Bridge.
St Pancras: Eurostars at St Pancras International under the splendid refurbished Barlow train shed on 6 March 2008.
St Pancras: View on 6 March showing the platforms at one level, and shops on the lower level.
Manchester Airport: 185139 stands at Manchester Airport with the 1327 service to Edinburgh Waverley on 6 March 2008. The extensive construction work is in connection with the provision of a third platform at the station The additional platform is scheduled to open in January 2009.
Dollar: Looking north east from the platform at the former Dollar station in the summer of 2008 along the Devon Valley route to Kinross. The station closed to passengers in 1964, with the line back to Alloa surviving until 1973. The trackbed here is now part of the Devon Way. For the view in the other direction see image [[18308]]. [Ref query 25 June 2018]
Tillicoultry: View east across the A908 Moss Road, Tillicoultry, on 6 March 2008 from a point between the platforms of the late Tillicoultry station (behind camera), over the long gone level crossing. Ahead lies the route of the former Devon Valley line running towards Dollar. The sign for the Devon Way now warns horses not to exceed a canter! See image [[3336]]
Dollar: Platform remains at Dollar on the former Devon Valley Line on 6 March 2008 looking west along what is now the Devon Way towards Tillicoultry. See image [[27868]]
Christchurch: A tram arrives at Cathedral Junction, Christchurch, on 6 March 2008.
Christchurch: Tram 244 operating on a city tour in Christchurch, New Zealand, on 6 March 2008.
Bonnyton Junction: Looking east over the old Dalry line, Kilmarnock station is behind the trees above the end of metal fence on the right. The up line remains still in situ (was used for a number of years after the line closed for testing track maintenance equipment - siding extended almost to Knockentiber). The bank in the middle distance hides the Barrhead line, but the buffers on the Johnnie Walker siding headshunt can be seen.
Bonnyton Junction: A view with all the existing lines visible. The two remaining sidings in the Long Lyes are visible, as vegetation clearance extended right along to the connection with the Troon line, which can just about be seen glinting in the distance.
Kilmarnock Goods Junction: Taken from the footpath which runs along the north side of the railway, looking south-west. The 0758 Hrs Sprinter (156513?) has just departed Kilmarnock for Glasgow Central. Johnnie Walker siding headshunt in the foreground (reopening unlikely with Diageo pulling Johnnie Walkers out of Kilmarnock). Kilmarnock No 1 signalbox was on the bank just about where the front end of the sprinter is passing (steps down the banking from the footpath are still there, but well buried in the brambles!).
Long Lyes: Know anybody who wants to acquire a couple of old railway engineers' wagons? These two have been sitting in Kilmarnock Long Lyes for at least 25 years (!) and have only been recently uncovered by the guys with the chain saws. Now that work is underway on the new run-round loop nearby these two relics won't last much longer, nor will those two remaining sidings. Buildings in the background are built on the site of Kilmarnock works; the wall behind the wagons was once the boundary of same.
Kilmarnock Goods Junction: Looking west to the Western Road bridges; Dalry line Bridge 102 on the left, behind the bank, Barrhead line Bridge 108 to the right. Both bridges date from the 1930s, when the Western Road was widened with the intention of forming an early bypass; a scheme that failed miserably.
Ashton Gate: Freightliner 66596 photographed at Ashton Gate on 6 March 2009 heading back along the former Portishead branch towards Bristol Temple Meads with a loaded coal train from Portbury import terminal.
Bristol Harbour: The steam-powered dock crane located next to the Bristol Harbour Railway headquarters and looked after by them. It does steam on gala/high days. Photographed on 6 March 2009.
Ashton Gate: Driver obtaining permission to proceed east beyond Ashton Gate towards Bristol with a coal train off the Portbury branch (all outbound trains being required to stop at this point). Freightliner locomotive 66596 is in charge.

Minster: Southeastern 375613 calls at Minster whilst working a Ramsgate to Charing Cross service on 06 March 2010. The trailing points at the back of the train form the southwestern part of the triangle on the line to Deal.
Gretna Township: Bridge remains south of Gretna looking towards the Solway Firth. The bridge was part of the private railway system serving the enormous wartime factory complex that stretched from Eastriggs in the west through Gretna and across the border to Longtown in the east.

Minster: A morning London to Ramsgate service enters Minster station in the hands of 375712 on 6 March 2010.
Medstead and Four Marks: LNER A4 60019 'Bittern' adds to the cotton wool sky as it heads east to Medstead & Four Marks on the Mid-Hants Railway on 6 March 2010. Bittern is now (2021) in dry storage near Brighton, awaiting a heavy general overhaul.
Minster: Looking east with 375613 entering Minster station on a Ramsgate to London Charing Cross service on 6 March 2010. On the right is the south western side of the triangle with the line to Deal.
Kirkcaldy: 170s off the north end of Kirkcaldy station, one in the siding and the other on the Up line, on Sunday 6 March. The siding is not normally used on a Sunday as there are no terminating trains, but a special timetable was in place for engineering work diversions. Note the painting of Bennochy Road overbridge. There was a fad in the 1980s for painting such bridges with geometric shapes. To today's eyes it has the effect of drawing attention to something humdrum without making it attractive. How tastes change.
Drumgelloch: Sign at Drumgelloch, the last of the new stations on the Aidrie - Bathgate line, which opened to passengers on Sunday 6 March 2011.
Drumgelloch: The 08.37 Edinburgh Waverley - Helensburgh Central calls at the new Drumgelloch station on its opening day, Sunday 6 March 2011.

Edinburgh Waverley: View over the former suburban platforms at Waverley on 6 March 2012, with class 334 and 380 units and a pair of CrossCountry Voyagers visible. Work is well underway on the refurbishment of the canopies and the accesss stairway.
Heysham Port: Panorama of Heysham Port area on 6 March 2012 as DRS Class 20 20309 leads two flasks plus 20308 down the short branch from the power station. On the right is the line leading to the passenger station at the Port terminal. The lines meet just under the bridge from which the photograph was taken.
Haymarket [Tram]: View west alongside the Edinburgh and Glasgow main line on 6 March 2012. On the right is the lower end of the Haymarket Yards tram tracks with more being laid in the distance. Offices now occupy the former coal yard.
Stranraer: Platform scene at Stranraer Harbour on 6 March 2012. The efforts of Louis Wall's station adoption group are certainly brightening up what might otherwise be a fairly gloomy scene on such a day.
Haymarket [Tram]: View down Haymarket Yards towards the E & G main line on 6 March 2012, with a CrossCountry Voyager passing.
Bare Lane: The driver of a brace of Class 20s collects the single line staff and ground frame keys from the Bare Lane signalman before proceeding to Heysham Power Station to collect a re-processing load for Sellafield. The Type 1s had been waiting on the Hest Bank chord for the Heysham Boat Train to clear the section. When this signal box closed in 2012 control passed to Preston power box and the staff was no longer required.
Heysham Port: Having reset the Heysham Power Station ground frame for the passenger line the DRS guard is back aboard the idling 20308 and sister 20309 accelerates away towards Morecambe where the flask train will reverse and head for Sellafield. See image [[38034]]
Princes Street [Tram]: An eerily deserted west end of Edinburgh Princes Street, overlooked by the 'Binns Clock', as the normally packed roads are prepared for tram track laying on 6 March 2012.
Heysham Port: The driver of 20309 looks back towards his colleague operating the Heysham Power Station ground frame as he leaves with a nuclear reprocessing load on 6 March 2012. Once the train has cleared the points, and they have been reset for the line to Heysham Port passenger station, the guard will climb aboard 20308 on the rear. See image [[37915]]
Morecambe: Having reversed at Morecambe station 20308 leads 20309, with the nuclear fuel flasks from Heysham Power Station, towards Bare Lane (beyond the distant overbridge) where they will take the chord to Hest Bank and then the Cumbrian Coast line to Sellafield where the load will be reprocessed.
Haymarket: Part of the new mural that has begun to appear alongside the work in progress at Haymarket station, seen here on 6 March 2013.
Rosslynlee: Frontage of the former Rosslynlee station on the Peebles loop on 6 March 2013, half a century after closure. View is north east towards Hawthornden Junction. The level crossing stood to the right of the building. See image [[25306]]
Dumbarton Central: A North Clyde electric service stands alongside the eastbound platform at Dumbarton Central on 6 March 2013. The photograph is taken from 'The Coffee Station' which opened here on 19 February.
Helensburgh Central: Signs of spring at Helensburgh Central, 6 March 2013.
Rosslynlee: Looking along the platform side of the former Rosslynlee station in March 2013 see image [[42280]]. View is north east towards Hawthornden Junction.
Horsted Keynes: W.H. Smith newsagents at Horsted Keynes station, Bluebell Railway, on Bank Holiday Monday, 6th May 2013. This station was used in a few episodes of the popular ITV drama series 'Downton Abbey' for which purpose it was temporarily renamed 'Downton'. (A lot of thought must have gone into that.) A cinema feature film of 'Downton Abbey' was released in cinemas in 2019.
Bloxham: At a site a little to the east of where Bloxham station once stood, the remains of a footbridge existed in 2014 when I attempted (and failed) to locate any remnants of the station. From old maps I have established that the line at this point was in a cutting, now filled in and built on to the right. Bloxham was on the Banbury & Cheltenham Direct Railway, later the GWR, closing to passengers in 1951 and freight in 1963.
St Andrew Square [Tram]: A tram turns off Princes Street into South St Andrew Street on 6 March heading for St Andrew Square.
Banbury: A view across some redundant track towards the south side of Banbury station in March 2014 as a Chiltern Railways Class 165, having terminated, waits at platform 1 before returning to London.
Banbury: Looking south at Banbury in March 2014 with Chiltern Railways 2-car 165003 in the un-numbered north facing bay. Following the resignalling of Banbury in July 2016 the track was lifted from this bay.
Banbury: With 67014 providing the push power a Chiltern Railways service makes the last stop on a Birmingham to London service on 6 March 2014. DVT 82301 was on the front. The new multi-storey station car park is under construction on the left.
Banbury: The 11.46 Southampton Central - Newcastle Central CrossCountry Voyager heads north from Banbury on 6 March 2014. Banbury North signal box stands on the left.
Banbury: Chiltern Railways 168214 arrives at Banbury on 6 March 2014 with the 14.05 London Marylebone - Birmingham Moor Street. Banbury South signal box is on the right framed by a pair of 21st Century semaphore signals.
Chilvers Coton: 66085 is held at the signal south of Coton Arches, Nuneaton, on 6 March 2015 with oil tanks from Coundon Road, Coventry. [Ref query 6402]
Cardiff Central: The impressive art deco lights in the foyer of Cardiff Central on 6 March 2015.
Cardiff Queen Street: The recommissioned platform 5 at Cardiff Queen Street is now fully operational see image [[45171]]. Trains are segregated, with Taff Vale trains (Merthyr, Aberdare, Treherbert) using 5 and trains for Rhymney and Coryton using 4. View north on 6 March with ATW 150213 recently arrived at platform 5 with the 1442 Bridgend - Aberdare service.
Bargeddie Bridge: A Motherwell - Milngavie service approaches the site of the new Braehead viaduct on 6th March 2015. The temporary embankments and retaining wall of gabion baskets at the side of the railway line are nearing completion. Piling work for the replacement M8/Bredisholm Road overbridge is underway off picture to the right. Rail services should be unaffected by the works until the planned closure in July.
Cardiff Central: Tracklaying has started for the new platform 8 at Cardiff Central. Scene on 6 March 2015 as a class 56 waits in the siding and a train for Merthyr is arriving at platform 6.
Grosmont: Fifty years to the day after formal closure of the line from Whitby to Rillington Junction, Standard 4MT 2-6-0 76079, prepares to leave Grosmont with its train to Pickering.
Leaderfoot Viaduct: Looking west along the Tweed towards Leaderfoot Viaduct on 6 March 2016. The large pyramidal finial marks the southern entrance to the category A listed Drygrange Old Bridge, dating from 1780, which carried the A68 across the Tweed until 1974. Some 300m behind the camera is the confluence of the rivers Tweed and Leader.
Gordon: The tail of the platform still remains under Station Road at Gordon. This view looks under the bridge at the station and towards Duns.
Leaderfoot Viaduct: A rowing boat, at the Drygrange beat of the Tweed, with the Leaderfoot viaduct and fishermen's hut in the background.
Alnwick (Lionheart) : Replica signals and a new signal box have been erected on the Aln Valley Railway at Alnwick (Lionheart).
Earlston: View to Gordon over what had been Earlston station, a two platform station with a goods yard (to the left). Little remains of the station and goods yard, the site now being an industrial estate.
Bath Junction: I should have known this would happen when I commented on recent maintenance see image [[37063]]. The down side here is clear: another relic of the S&D has been demolished. The up side is that the removal of the S&D bridge will allow electrification of the GWML. A footbridge usable by cyclists will be built here to maintain the integrity of the Two Tunnels Trail. Devonshire and Combe Down tunnels are up the hill to the left.
Gordon: Wide view east over the old station at Gordon in March 2016, with extension work in progress. See image [[23768]]
Leaderfoot Viaduct: Leaderfoot Viaduct seen from the west with the old and new road bridges beyond.
Newstead: A reminder of the short lived Newstead station (November 1849 - October 1852) to the west of its site. The station was initially, and briefly, named Newbridge until 1850. Sidings remained to the east for a few years after closure to passengers. The embankment now forms a longitudinal garden at the rear of houses in Newstead.
Leaderfoot Viaduct: There are two embankments to the north of Leaderfoot Viaduct, the one on the approach to the viaduct and the other to its west (seen on the left). I don't imagine the Berwickshire was planning a triangular junction with the Waverley Route (and two viaducts) and suspect the second embankment is the remains of a siding associated with the construction of the viaduct. This siding, which would have been approached from the Earlston direction, appears to have gone out of use after construction was finished. The formation is still clearly visible.
Tweedbank: A quiet Sunday morning at Tweedbank in the spring of 2016 with a 158 standing alongside platform 1.
Darnick Siding: Darnick looking to Edinburgh showing the remains of a bridge over Lye Road and looking towards the site of the sidings.
Much of the trackbed between Tweedbank and Ravenswood Junction appears, at first sight, to now be occupied by the A6091, and indeed some is. However the trackbed exists for much of the length on the north side of the road. The trackbed, sometimes landscaped, is in use as a footpath.
The site of the Darnick sidings is now occupied by two houses and the route of the line continues through 'Shunters Wud', and then as a footpath, to Tweedbank station.
Alnwick (Lionheart) : The view from the new footbridge at Alnwick (Lionheart).
Earlston: A sleeper palisade fence remains to the north of the former goods yard at Earlston station - one of very few reminders of the railway here. The goods yard was beyond the fence, with the passenger platforms beyond that.
Melrose: Melrose looking to Tweedbank showing the footpath running by the A6091. Plenty of space here of track relaying! There was a very long siding to the right - often full of carriages - and the approach to the goods yard came off to the left here originally running round the down platform to re-join the line (the connection at the east end was later severed). The hillside to the left was beloved of generations of postcard and railway photographers.
In its initial layout, four tracks passed between the platforms, the two tracks up the middle allowing pass through.
Leaderfoot Viaduct: Below the lofty Leaderfoot Viaduct looking to [[Earlston]].
Alnwick (Lionheart) : Locomotive Penicuik, now in preservation at the Aln Valley Railway, worked at the Valleyfield Paper Mill, Penicuik. The Penicuik Railway closed in March 1967 and the mill in July 1975. Penicuik at the Aln Valley Railway.
Earlston: Station Brae, Earlston, is not on the site of the station but the north end of the loop which passed between the two station platforms. The station was behind the camera. See image [[54416]] for the same view 19 years earlier.
Alnwick (Lionheart) : The new footbridge at Lionheart is by Michael Fairnington of Wooler. The locomotives are Andrew Barclay 615 and Drewry 0-6-0DM 'Drax'.
Gordon: Entrance to the former station and goods yard at Gordon, Berwickshire, looking east from the A6089 Station Road in the spring of 2016. The last branch pickup freight had passed through here more than 50 years earlier on 16 July 1965 on its return from Greenlaw to St Boswells (see image [[58926]]).
Oldfield Park: I have a feeling that that road bridge will have to be modified for electrification - not that the up HST is bothered. The S&D see image [[54464]] crossed beyond the bridge in the background.
Tweedbank: View south at Tweedbank on 6 March 2016 with ScotRail 158730 accelerating away from the lengthy platform. On the left is the train crew building, which carries the name 'Eildon View' and, in the background, the reason why it carries the name. The departing train is the 1245 Sunday service to Edinburgh Waverley, scheduled to arrive there at 1340.
Earlston: This was the road between Earlston and Leaderfoot until it was re-routed on higher ground to the right on a better alignment - that alignment being the former Berwickshire Railway. See image [[34068]] for the same location as it was (note the distant treeline). The view is to the south. It's not often this site features a disused road!
Bowshank North Bridge: The 1745 Tweedbank-Edinburgh heads north in increasing snow from Bowshank Tunnel. Nice to finally see this location open - walking through the tunnel during the closed period would often find farm machinery sheltering from the weather. See image [[46543]] for a similar earlier view.
Gordon: The former station at Gordon on the Berwickshire Railway, looking north east towards Greenlaw in March 2016. The station here closed to passengers in 1948, although the last operational section of the line, between Ravenswood Junction and Greenlaw, survived until 1965. The station has been much modified since closure, while the old goods yard in the background now hosts a private civil works operation. During the railway era the yard contained stone crushing and loading facilities serving a local quarry - see image [[59939]].
Rye: The northbound platform at Rye, now the only crossing loop on the singled section of the Ashford to Hastings line between Appledore and Ore, seen from 171727 calling with a train to Ashford International on 6th March 2017. The main buildings of the station, quite delightful architecturally, are on the southbound platform.
Kingsknowe: A 156 headed for Glasgow calls at Kingsknowe on 06/03/2017. Nobody got on and nobody got off. This is the Cinderella line into Edinburgh; let's see if full electrification brings more services and footfall.
Ashford International: 171725 at Ashford International, just arrived with a semi-fast service from Brighton, where it will return on 6th March 2017. This service ceased at the start of the May 2018 timetable, replaced by a stopping service from Ashford International as far as Eastbourne.
Three Oaks: Abandoned former northbound platform at Three Oaks (formerly Three Oaks & Guestling), seen from a Brighton to Ashford International train, on 6th March 2017. This is on the now-singled section of the Ashford to Hastings line between Appledore and Ore with the train calling at the former southbound platform, now bi-directional. At least a sign has been put up among the ruins to help passengers identify which way they want to travel.
Greenfaulds: Waiting on next train, travelling from Motherwell to Edinburgh the long way round.
Falkirk Grahamston: Next part of the journey from Motherwell to Edinburgh the long way round.
Slateford Viaduct: 68 007 Valiant slowly crosses the Water of Leith Viaduct to the west of Slateford station.
Kingsknowe: An Edinburgh-bound 158 calls at Kingsknowe with an hourly service to Edinburgh. Kingsknowe closed for a few years and reopened in 1971 after a local campaign. Quite an achievement when railways were surely at their nadir.
Ashford International: 171725, from Brighton via Hastings and Rye, arriving at Ashford International, where it will terminate, on 6th March 2017. This semi-fast service from Brighton ceased at the start of the May 2018 timetable, replaced by a service of stopping trains between Eastbourne and Ashford International.
Edinburgh Waverley: 92033, in Caledonian Sleeper livery, waits its next turn at Edinburgh Waverley on 6th March 2017.
Coleraine: A Belfast - Londonderry DMU heads north past Coleraine signal box shortly after restarting its journey on 6 March 2018.
Coleraine: View south over Bushmills Road level crossing, looking towards Coleraine station on 6 March 2018. Just about to restart on its journey to Londonderry is the Translink 0810 service from Belfast Great Victoria Street.
Bolton-le-Sands: The new Class 88 electro-diesels have been used occasionally on the Heysham and Hartlepool flask trains recently but on 6th March 2018 it was 68023 and 68002 in charge. This is the return Heysham to Sellafield working approaching Bolton-le-Sands level crossing, with a storm damaged tree encroaching on the scene.
Coleraine: A Portrush shuttle service meets a Belfast - Londonderry train at Coleraine station on 6 March 2018.
Coppull Hall Sidings: The density of silver birch means that this view is really only possible over winter. Taken from where Coppull Hall Sidings and Chisnall Hall Colliery line approached the main line, to the south of Coppull Hall Sidings SB. An interesting 'modern' find in the undergrowth is a 1970s 'Danger Overhead Wires' sign. The Class 319 is heading to Preston and Blackpool as it approaches the minor summit between Wigan and Coppull.
Mossend No 1 Junction: 68006, on the empty coaching stock movement from Edinburgh to Motherwell, passing through Mossend Yard on 6th March 2019. It is very difficult to get a good picture through the fence at Mossend without getting overhead masts in the way.
Bellshill: 1S37 London Euston to Glasgow service passing through Bellshill station, running some 30min late, on 6th March 2019.
Coppull Hall Sidings: A Voyager travels north at the site of the former Coppull Hall Sidings on 06 March 2019. There was a signalbox here, located on the right, just beyond the first OHLE stanchion. Beyond that and parallel to the WCML were the sidings. To the right in the trees was Hic-bibi brick works which was also rail connected. The other railway that arrived here from the west was the Chisnall Hall colliery mineral railway.
Lancaster: Brand new, and as yet un-numbered, CAF EMU 331108 pausing in Platform 5 at Lancaster Castle whilst on test runs between here and Preston on 6th March 2019. Inside the unit the tables and seats still had the dust covers on.
Coatbridge Central: Colas Rail 70003 runs north through Coatbridge Central on 6 March 2019 during an Oxwellmains to Grangemouth light engine movement. In the background GBRf 66737 waits in the down loop with the Fort William to North Blyth empty Alcan tanks.
Coatbridge Central: 68007 on the Motherwell TMD (DRS) to Edinburgh Waverley empty coaching movement through Coatbridge Central.
Coatbridge Central: GBRf 66737 passing through the disused down side of the island platform at Coatbridge Central on 6 March 2019. The train is the Fort William to North Blyth empty Alcan tanks.
Eastleigh: 08460 shunting rakes of wagons around the sidings at Eastleigh on 6th March 2020. Judging by all the movements, I suspect a lot of Permanent Way work is currently taking place in the district.

Woodacre Crossing: A run out from Kingmoor for 37402, taking 66433 to Crewe and seen here passing Woodacre on 6th March 2021. The reason for the drag became apparent as they passed with several wheel flats on the 66 knocking loudly.

2000 | Funding for Edinburgh CrossRail | Announcement of the award by the shadow Strategic Rail Authority of £0.8M from their Rail Passenger Partnership Fund to the City of Edinburgh Council for Edinburgh Crossrail. With the award a year ago of £8M from the Scottish Public Transport Fund, all the money is now in place and by early 2002 the 1.8 km between Portobello East Junction and Niddrie South Junction last used by passenger trains in January 1969 will reopen with a half-hourly daytime frequency linking Haymarket and Waverley (running from Bathgate but to Dunblane) with two new stations at Brunstane and Newcraighall (Kinnaird Park), where there will be a 600-space park-and-ride for cars coming off the A1. These will be the first stations on the East side of Edinburgh (apart from the temporary platform at Meadowbank for the 1986 Commonwealth Games) since the closure of Abbeyhill, Piershill, Portobello and Joppa in September 1964. The scheme includes a reversing siding at Newcraighall (Kinnaird Park) so as to keep passenger trains out of the way of freight and this could provide the first part of an extension towards Midlothian and the Scottish Borders if those Councils can find a way forward on implementation of the findings in the recent Borders Rail Study which found that a half-hourly service to Tweedbank would cost £73M to establish but could cover its direct costs. |

2012 | 502 train Merseyrail set for new life [BBC News] | A rotting train - which was once at the cutting edge of rail travel - is to be given a new lease of life by enthusiasts. The LMS-designed Class 502 Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) was the most advanced of its time when it started life in the forties on the suburban lines around Liverpool. Replacing the existing steam-hauled carriages, they had significant improvements - automatic sliding doors, higher speeds and increased frequency. This last remaining 502 was saved from the scrapyard in 1980, after running its final service on Merseyrail. In 2009, the Friends of the 502 group acquired it from the National Railway Museum when they found out there was no room to store it. The group said it was a ^shame to see it go to scrap^ so they took it over and stored it at a site in Tebay, Cumbria. They now hope to restore it to ^almost original condition^. 2016 | Pacers: The train that the UK has struggled to get rid of [BBC News] | Moves are finally afoot to get rid of much-maligned trains built from the body of a bus. But how did Britain^s railways come to rely on the Pacer? There^s the rattling, the shuddering, the bouncing and the occasional squealing. You don^t have to be a trainspotter to know you^re riding a Pacer. Essentially, each one is an old Leyland Motors bus frame mounted on train wheels and, thanks to the vehicle^s rudimentary suspension, regular travellers are all too familiar with the distinctive sounds and sensations.
