Cranley Gardens

This bridge parapet on the east side of Muswell Hill Road, seen from a passing 134 bus to Warren Street that I travelled on as far as Highgate, is where the former GNR Alexandra Palace branch passed underneath, seen on the beautiful afternoon of Saturday, 30th April 2022. From here, one can walk the old line towards Muswell Hill across the lofty Muswell Hill Viaduct. But for WWII, this would now be part of the Northern Line but the scheme was never completed after 1945, although steam trains continued to chug up the Northern Heights until 1954. Cranley Gardens station was on the west side of this road but quickly fell into an advanced state of dereliction after the end of the remaining freight service in 1957. The remains were swept away in the 1970s and a block of flats now stands on the site.
