The 5.03pm service to Glasgow Central ready to leave Gourock behind Fairburn 2-6-4T 42274. The photograph was taken on Friday 28th April 1967, and this was the final steam hauled service on the line. In recent years I have come to realise that the train had wider significance, as I believe that it was the final occasion, in BR days, on which a steam locomotive from a Scottish shed worked a scheduled 'Scottish' passenger service. Quite a number of Anglo-Scottish services were steam hauled, albeit by English-based locomotives, on later dates in 1967, but I think that this was the last purely Scottish one.
