MV 'Maid of Cumbrae', photographed from PS 'Caledonia' off Largs in 1965. The Maid was dressed overall to mark the centenary of Wemyss Bay pier. The 'Caledonia' was similarly adorned, though not quite overall (see 82936), and had called at Wemyss Bay in the course of a charter sailing down the Ayrshire coast to Stranraer. One recalls that the 'Maids' were regarded at the time as somewhat second rate in comparison with the paddle steamers and turbines plying the Clyde. But it has to be admitted that, on a day like this, they did look rather racy!
