A busy scene at Campbeltown in May 1970. TS 'Duchess of Hamilton' and PS 'Waverley' are both visiting, and on the inside of the pier is Western Ferries 'Sound of Islay'. May 1970 was the month in which the 'Sound of Islay' started to operate a new service between Campbeltown and Red Bay, Northern Ireland, after two successful years serving Islay. She returned later to the Islay service and was sold into Canadian ownership in 1981. She remains in service in Newfoundland to this day. One cannot help but contrast the story of this 1968 product of Ferguson's yard in Port Glasgow with the present-day fiasco of Calmac's 'Glen Sannox', not yet in service more than five years after the start of construction.
