Oakwood

Oakwood station, LU Piccadilly Line, looking across its low island platform from west to east, on 9th January 2023. This station opened as Enfield West, a temporary terminus of the second stage Cockfosters extension from Arnos Grove, on 13th March 1933. The extension also included a new station at Southgate where the line briefly returns to deep-level tube tunnels. Complaints about Enfield West's name started almost from day one as it is a good few miles from Enfield town and this resulted in it being renamed Enfield West (Oakwood) on 3rd May 1934. Eventually, the LPTB gave up the pretence of serving Enfield and on 1st September 1946 it became simply Oakwood. (The line was completed one stop further to Cockfosters on 31st July 1933, a month after the formation of the LPTB.)
