Although only 14km long the Crinan Canal accommodated vessels up to 26.8m long with locks to match and a commensurate demand for water. This was provided by a network of nine reservoirs to the south of the Canal in North Knapdale and which feed into the summit level at Dunardry. Some of the reservoirs are in cascade and the photograph shows the overflow spillway from Loch Clachaig into Gleann Loch below. Loch Clachaig was one of the later reservoirs to be introduced into the network with the earth dam being constructed in 1864.
