The down platform at Farnborough, seen from The Railway Touring Company's 'The End of Southern Steam' return railtour from Weymouth to Waterloo, on 9th July 2023. It was opened by the London & Southampton Railway in 1838 with the extension from Woking to Shapley Heath (renamed Winchfield by 1840), eleven years before the separate station on the North Downs line opened. At the Grouping in 1923, the North Downs station was renamed Farnborough North and this one renamed Farnborough (Main). This is still the official title but station nameboards show it simply as Farnborough.
