A 2012 view of the 1903 Marton Direct line from Kirkham to Blackpool South, where it joined the coast line into Blackpool Central, very close to the Tower. Marton was an intermediate L&YR signal box on this line, where in 1940 a rail served gas works was constructed alongside. This closed in 1971 but the two gas holders can be seen in this view, although they were demolished three years later. The entire link road is built on the embankment of the old railway. Far right in this picture is the junction where it joins the M55 motorway, itself built partly on the railway alignment.
