Barnoldswick

Barnoldswick was built as a through station but various proposals to link to the Hellifield line around Gisburn never materialised and the only railway beyond the platform was the goods yard. When the line was open, a much photographed feature was this ancient crossbar signal. The red bar would be swung through 90 degrees once the level crossing was closed to road traffic (See 43077). After the railway closed in 1966 the town war memorial was moved to the old station site. This is a direct 'then and now' comparison between the platform view in 1962 (courtesy Lens of Sutton Association) and the same location in 2023.
