Engeln: Railscot contributor Ian Dinmore strides purposefully in search of another master shot, having just alighted from the Vulkan Expess at the Engeln terminus of the Brohltalbahn in the summer of 2002. This metre gauge railway starts at Brohl on the left bank of the Rhine north of Koblenz and climbs into the Eifel hills. On this occasion the motive power was railcar No VT30 which is clearly quite powerful to judge from the trailing load but was nonetheless on the point of overheating by the time it reached Engeln.

Sinclairtown [1st]: Looking east across the main line at Sinclairtown to the former up goods yard on 22 August 2008. The two large goods sheds survive, with one of them serving for a time as the Kirkcaldy Depot of National Carriers Limited, whose vehicles were once a common sight in most of our towns and cities.
Sinclairtown [1st]: An Edinburgh - Perth train about to pass through Sinclairtown, a mile north of Kirkcaldy, in August 2008. The train is passing the site of the extensive goods facilities that once occupied both the up ([[20575]]) and down ([[20576]]) sides of the line in the industrial area to the west of St Clair Street.

Cameron Bridge [1st]: View west over the station site at Cameron Bridge towards the recently upgraded and extended Diageo distillery complex on 22 August 2008. The former Leven Railway route to Thornton Junction runs off to the right. Discussions have taken place regarding the possible reopening of the section to handle future rail based freight traffic at the distillery. Such a move would also give added impetus to the proposal to reopen the line through to Levenmouth, currently being pursued by the local authority in conjunction with Transport Scotland.
Lytham: View from the road bridge at the east end of Lytham station looking towards St Annes on 22 August 2008. The platform shelter is a far cry from the splendour of the former station building, now converted to a restaurant and operating as the Station Tavern. See image [[20528]]
Sinclairtown [1st]: The redevelopment of urban brownfield sites continues to erase reminders of the railway presence from many areas of our towns and cities. One surviving example is the former Sinclairtown goods yard, occupying old railway land on both sides of the line just south of the site of the former station. The remains of the down yard are seen here from the old gate near the corner of Factory Road and Junction Road on a wet 22 August 2008. The down yard handled mainly coal traffic, although sidings ran south to other industrial premises in the area. Embedded track still exists in many parts of the yard, including a line into the building occupied by the lorry on the right. To the left of the white van is part of a long loading ramp and beyond that stands the single storey Railway Club. New housing development has now reached the west side of Junction Road, just behind the camera.

Helensburgh Pier: PS Waverley sets off across the Tail of the Bank from Helensburgh heading for the next port of call, Dunoon during the Saturday 22 August 2009 Clyde cruise from Glasgow to Tighnabruaich. With Gourock over the bow and with many passengers enjoying the sea breeze and sunshine on the upper deck of the former LNER Clyde paddle steamer.
Glenrothes with Thornton: For many years there was an hourly stopping service from Edinburgh to Markinch during the day. In December 2008 this was cut back to Kirkcaldy with new hourly services to Perth and to Dundee taking over the Markinch stops from these and Aberdeen services. Termination at Kirkcaldy lasted only a few months when from May 2009 these services were extended to Glenrothes with Thornton (only) giving it an extra train to and from Edinburgh via Kirkcaldy, supplementing the hourly circle. At the bi-directional Platform 1 at Glenrothes a 158 waits to depart with such a service on 22 August.
Glenrothes with Thornton: Unusually, the bidirectional platforms at Glenrothes are on different lines and whereas the Fife Circle platform 1 sees three trains an hour during the day, platform 2, serving the north curve to the main line, has no departures between 0728 and 2246. The Customer Information Screen therefore doesn't have much to do so contents itself with a welcome to a 'Thornton Glenrothes' station, a name I suspect Thornton residents would prefer. Photographed on 22 August 2009.
Bir Bou Regba: Railscot contributor Colin Harkins standing next to locomotive 550 556 at Bir Bou Regba station in Tunisia on 22 August 2010. This loco ran on 1m gauge track.

As can be seen, the yard appears to be well stocked at this particular time.
Dalmeny: A Fife Circle train returning to Edinburgh heads south from Dalmeny on 22 August 2011. At the down platform in the background an outbound service prepares to head north onto the Forth Bridge. Note the materials and equipment stored in the bridge engineer's yard in the background see image [[54772]].

Although there is still bullhead rail and wooden sleepers on the Hellifield bound track, much has been relaid on the Clitheroe track including a section at the east end of the village with steel sleepers. Whilst there are few passenger services on this line, it has a regular daily flow of coal, logs and engineers trains (amongst other loads) heading south west towards Blackburn and onto the WCML at Farington Junction.

The Network Rail poster reads 'The taxi rank is closed. The nearest place to grab a cab is on Market Street or Waverley Bridge.' (This station was known as Margate West until 1953 when Margate East (for Cliftonville) station closed.)
York Place [Tram]: The current Edinburgh Tram terminus at York Place, looking west towards Queen Street on 22 August 2015. The layout of this terminus certainly looks 'temporary'.
Whitstable: Whitstable station in Kent, seen from 375 803 from London Victoria to Ramsgate calling on 22nd August 2015. This station was originally called Whitstable & Tankerton and is one of the many that suffered from the old BR regime's mania for shortening station names that had an '&' in them in the 1980s. Cholsey & Moulsford is another which is now just Cholsey while Elstree & Borehamwood became just Elstree for a time but the full name has now been restored. Others, like Highbury & Islington, however, managed to escape unscathed while, ironically, Wroxham station in Norfolk had an '&' added to its name when it became Hoveton & Wroxham!

Holloway Road: View from refurbished LUL 1973 stock on a Piccadilly Line service to Heathrow Terminals 1, 2, 3 calling at Holloway Road, on 22nd August 2020. Some Underground stations continue to be temporarily closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. We joined this train at Wood Green to travel to Green Park and it did not stop at Arsenal nor Covent Garden. Returning home a few hours later, on the 29 bus along Tottenham Court Road, we saw that Goodge Street on the Northern Line is also closed.
Burton and Holme: DB 66097 heads north through Burton and Holme with a Daventry to Mossend intermodal on 22nd August 2020.
Down Street: The still extant entrance to the London Underground's former Down Street station, on 22nd August 2020. This opened on 15th December 1906 with the Great Northern, Piccadilly & Brompton Railway (now part of the much extended Piccadilly Line) and closed on 21st May 1932. Situated in the heart of Mayfair, it never paid its way being surrounded by high class hotels whose patrons probably had their own transport, plus its close proximity to Hyde Park Corner station made it an easy target for early closure. Clearly the work of Leslie W. Green, the Underground's Chief Architect of the Edwardian period (who died in 1908 at the tragically young age of 34), the station went on to have an afterlife during WWII when the underground rooms were converted into a secret bunker for Churchill and the War Cabinet. From time to time, TfL conduct guided tours into the subterranean depths of this ghost station; alas I have not yet managed to go on one.
Ayr: The clingwrap on the Station Hotel is apparently not totally effective and the Hanging Gardens are coming back. 22nd August 2021.

Thornton North Junction: Freightliner 66536 leads the empty ballast wagons from the Levenmouth branch drop past Thornton North Junction on 22 August 2022. 66532 was dead on rear.
