The Branch Line Society's Lothian & Fife Wanderer's presence at Bogside on 23 August 1980 allowed participants close inspection of gunpowder vans for a nearby quarry, the only traffic to this remnant of the Stirling - Dunfermline railway by this time. Forty years later almost everything in this picture has gone but the signal box survives in reasonable condition. [[75020]] #COP26

Barassie Junction: Barassie Junction and Signalbox looking southwest from the road bridge approach, 23 August, 1982. At the time, preparations were underway behind the 'box for the deviation of the line to ease the curve onto the line to Troon station, this connected up after the Troon avoiding line formally closed on Saturday, 27 November, 1982. The old Kilmarnock & Troon Railway alignment that formerly ran round to the harbour from Barassie Junction had been cut back to become dead-end sidings, circa 1973, when the harbour sidings were lifted, these sidings still in use in August, 1982 and visible behind the Signalbox, with what appeared to be a rail-mounted crane standing in the headshunt. There had been three more dead-end sidings on the west side of the Signalbox (on the original alignment of the K&TR), but these had been lifted after Barassie Works closed in (I believe) 1972.

Thale: Located on the north edge of the Harz mountains, the German town of Thale is the terminus of a branch from Quedlinburg and must have been a busy location during East German days. It is carrying the then new livery which involved a painted number replacing the cast numberplate and TCDD plate on the cabside and repositioning the the star and crescent moon higher on the cab. It retains the cast numberplate on the front. This particular loco has been equipped with both cab air conditioning and electric train heat, which affects their haulage capacity.

These former through platforms are now served by trains between Highbury & Islington and Crystal Palace or West Croydon or Clapham Junction via Peckham Rye (trains to New Cross start from Dalston Junction) via a reopened section of the former North London Railway's Broad Street viaduct. Trains between Stratford and Richmond or Clapham Junction via Kensington (Olympia) now serve two reinstated platforms on the north side. This station was opened in 1870, replacing an earlier one called Newington Road & Balls Pond a short distance east that had opened in 1858, 8 years after the line. It was badly damaged during the London 'Blitz' and, though still in use, the ruins survived for many years and I remember them well. The roof of the passageway leading to the ticket office had completely disintegrated and on wet days the rain poured in and there were also holes in the roof of the ticket office. Many times I espied the ticket clerk sitting under an umbrella in a desperate attempt to stay dry. These ruins were swept away in the 1970s when the once grand NLR station entrance was demolished and replaced by an ugly concrete block that resembles more a public convenience than a railway station. All the war-ravaged platform buildings were demolished at the same time and replaced, inevitably, by bus stop style waiting shelters which were also replaced in the 1990s with, that's right, more bus shelters! Personally, I preferred its moribund condition though I suspect I was in the minority and, of course, I didn't have to work there.

2013 | Nottingham renewed, refreshed and revised [The Rail Engineer] | Nottingham station is unusual in a couple of ways. For a start, it is comparatively new. Whilst many of Britain’s major stations were built in the middle of the nineteenth century, the current Nottingham Midland station didn’t open until 1904, which makes it Edwardian rather than Victorian. It was known as Nottingham Midland as there were several other Nottingham stations at that time. Nottingham Victoria was opened by the Great Central Railway (GCR) in 1900, designed by Albert Edward Lambert – the same architect that the Midland Railway employed a couple of years later for their own project. Perhaps the GCR’s impressive new station shamed the Midland into rebuilding theirs? Nottingham Victoria is now the site of the Victoria Centre shopping mall. |
