De Trafford Junction
A January 2024 view looking north along the Whelley Loop at the point where the still active Wigan to Hindley line crosses the loop. Just beyond the bridge was De Trafford Junction where a chord from Hindley Junction came in from the right until 1973. The bridge was originally two tracks but widened when the Atherton line was quadrupled and the Wigan avoiding line to Pemberton was built allowing fast L&YR trains to run from Manchester Victoria to Liverpool Exchange.
