Kirkless was a huge Iron Works to the east of Wigan that operated from 1859 onwards. In 1908 the site was extended with the addition of a coke works. From 1869 the complex was served by the half mile double track Round House branch from the junction of the same name on the Whelley Loop. The works and railway closed in 1930 but the branch can be followed as far as this old bridge by Kirkless Hall. Beyond here the embankment has gone and there is a commercial yard.
