In 1963, steam somewhat unexpectedly kept appearing on Queen Street banking duties. I seem to remember reading at the time that one reason for this was that, when NBL Type 2s were first tried out in 1962, residents in the North British Hotel complained that the diesels 'made too much noise at night'. Whatever the truth or otherwise of that recollection, Standard 2-6-4 tanks were seen quite frequently during 1963. This shot shows 80027 assisting the 3.45pm relief to Newcastle. The train engine was B1 61116 (see image 78908)
