Fin del Mundo

Argentina established a penal colony in Ushuaia in 1884. In 1902, as the prison and town developed, a narrow gauge railway was laid up the Pico Valley to bring timber for building and fuel. As it was used the railway extended further into the forest. The prison closed in 1947 and the railway in 1952. In 1994 a section was reopened for tourists, running from Fin del Mundo (End of the World) and has been extending into the national park. Diesel loco 'Tierra del Fuego' is newly arrived at the lower terminus on 2nd February 2024.
