Newton Heath

When the Manchester and Leeds Railway was built in the 1830s it crossed St Mary's Road, between Newton Heath and Moston, diagonally on a low bridge with small portals at sharp angles to the road. Later, road and railway were both widened with a new bridge. This distinctive structure, with steel arches over the tracks was the result. Once seen from the front windows of DMUs, nowadays passed unseen by most passengers, but captured on 11th October 2024. Note three running lines now reduced to two. The train is alongside Newton Heath depot looking back northwards. Authorised photo by Dale Farrer.
