Niddrie North Junction [Lothian Lines]

Niddrie North signal box looking south in a shot thought to date from 1972. The trackbed to the left was the connection to Wanton Walls and the ECML with a spur going off to the right before the occupation bridge to join the Waverley route at Niddrie South .Not visible in the shot is the connection from Niddrie West coming in from the right. This arrangement was opened by the NBR in 1915 allowed traffic to reach Leith Docks by avoiding Portobello East Junction.
The visible track is the Waverley Route heading to Millerhill Yard and the, by then, singled, curve to Niddrie West. To the right of the SB are a chimney of Newcraighall Colliery and in the hazy distance the top of one of the winding towers at Monktonhall Colliery.
