Originally opened in 1854 as the terminus of a spur from the London & Croydon line at Sydenham, trains were extended through the tunnel just visible in the background to a temporary station in Wandsworth in 1856 and finally to Victoria in 1860. Two platforms on a spur to Norwood Junction were added in 1857, out of view behind the wall on the left.
