Newchurch No 2 Tunnels

Looking towards Bacup, and Newchurch No.2 Tunnel, in The Glen between Waterfoot and Stacksteads, on 27th December 2024. This view taken from just beyond the north portal of No. 1 Tunnel and inside the cliff on the right is the parallel Thrutch Tunnel, which was excavated when the Bacup branch was made double track but is now sealed off. The last train ran to Bacup in December 1966 but the opening of the two Newchurch Tunnels to pedestrians and cyclists is a recent innovation.
