Wanstead

North side entrance to Wanstead station, east London, opened on 14th December 1947 as part of the eastern extension of the LU Central Line from Liverpool Street, seen here at 14.09 on Tuesday, 14th January 2025. The station was designed by Dr. Charles Holden (1875-1960), the Underground's Chief Architect between the two world wars and just after, although this is one of his lesser achievements. The station retained its wooden escalators until 2003, many years after the tragedy of the 1987 King's Cross fire.
