Carlisle Upperby Shed

BR crimson livery looks well on Coronation Pacific 46229 ‘Duchess of Hamilton’ after her superb restoration to working order, completed in 1980. The locomotive is seen here at Carlisle Upperby in November 1980 shortly before taking charge of the southbound leg of a ‘Cumbrian Mountain Express’. This was the first time the restored engine tackled the southbound ascent of Ais Gill, a task she was able to repeat with considerable success on number of occasions during the 1980s.
