Bacup Tunnel

Bacup Tunnel, or as it is often known locally, Stubbylee Tunnel, closed with the line from Rawtenstall on 3rd December 1966. It is now blocked off at the Bacup end but on the other side it opens into an area that is now a Highways depot and is used as their road salt store. The girders in the foreground are the railway bridge over the River Irwell, which carried two running lines and a loop to Holts Siding for the stone cutting works, connected by tramway to Lee Quarries on the moors until 1938.
