Very little time to enjoy the wonderful sight of Midland Compound 4-4-0 no.1000 piloting Jubilee 5593 ‘Kolhapur’ on a 1983 ‘Cumbrian Mountain Pullman’. Sleet turning to snow, plus a fierce gale, meant a quick dive out of the car as the train passed, then an even quicker dive back in. The train was very late due to earlier operating problems. Heavy ‘enthusiast’ traffic, with difficult road conditions, meant little prospect of catching up again as the train headed north. Zero prospect, in fact, as the tour was cut short at Appleby, rather than continuing to Carlisle.
