Totems and proper signals still ruled here in 1977. 40083 has the 1440 Edinburgh Aberdeen service with a BG on the front of the train no doubt much to the annoyance to the haulage merchants. 40083 was a York loco at the time and had no doubt worked up on one of the many overnight services on the East Coast Main Line. It was common at the time to find non SCR based 40s at work on trains like this. Scotland was great hunting grounds for class 40 haulage in those days.
