Rochdale: 1913 6-inch map extract of Rochdale showing the station and Facit Junction where the line to Bacup headed north and the line to Oldham diverged south eastwards. The Bacup line closed to passengers in 1947 but goods trains to Facit ran until 1967. The Oldham Loop carried passenger trains until 2009, when converted to Metrolink. Also shown is a branch of the Rochdale Canal, little used after the 1920s and now filled in, passing under the line by the station towards a town centre basin. Pilling: Although Preesall Salt Mine closed in 1931, brine continued to be pumped and transferred to the ICI plant via a pipeline under the River Wyre. It appears the pumping station continued to receive coal supplies by rail, probably initially from nearby Knott End and later, after the line was cut back in 1950, from Pilling. This letter from the District Goods Manager at Bolton informs the ICI staff that the Goods Depot at Pilling is closing with effect from 1st August 1963, with the line cut back further to Garstang Town, which itself only lasted two more years.
