Alyth Shed

Location type

Loco shed

Name and dates

Alyth Shed (1861-1942)

Opened on the Alyth Railway.

Description

A locomotive shed was provided at Alyth with the opening of the Alyth branch in 1861 from Meigle [1st] (later Alyth Junction). The original shed appears to have been on the south side of the line just east of the station, reached by reversal from the platform line. It was a short brick or stone one road building. A turntable was later added and more goods sidings added to the south and access to the shed from the east added, placing it on a loop.

A larger single road brick building replaced this, being on the north side of the station and capable of containing two locomotives. Approach was from the east. A water tank was outside the east end of the shed on the north side of the shed siding. The turntable was not relocated. It was perhaps built around 1900 when Forfar Shed [2nd] and Brechin Shed [2nd] were built.

Closure of the shed was in 1942 after which the water tank remained in use. The line closed to passengers in 1951 and completely in 1965.

The site of the station and sheds was cleared for housing after closure. Nothing remains.
