This iron works was established by the Glengarnock Iron Company on the shore of the Ardeer Peninsular just to the south of Stevenston. Good supplies of coal existed in the area. Five blast furnaces were built. Slag was deposited on the foreshore, leading to a still existing feature. The works was later owned by Merry and Cunningham. Also known as Stevenston Iron Works.
The works was served from opening by the Ardrossan Railway. Later a branch from the Lanarkshire and Ayrshire Railway was to built.
To reach the works the Lanarkshire and Ayrshire Railway crossed over the access road for Nobel Explosives Factory. This was to prove an problem in early days of the line, the road below flooding and freezing in cold weather which was hardly ideal for a road carrying explosives traffic. The main line of the same company passed over the road at Stevenston Moorpark.
