This was the house of James Macpherson famous for his translation of the poems of the blind bard Ossian, which Macpherson described as having translated having collected these from Gaelic oral tradition.
Although the provenance of the cycle of poems is mixed or dubious the work was popular throughout Europe and coincided with the Romantic Era, inspiring many works of art. This in turn lead to interest in Scotland and tourism.
A memorial obelisk to Macpherson is to the west of the entry to the Balavil Estate's west lodge.
