This was originally the branch for the New Cumnock Iron Works, called New Cumnock Iron Works Company's Branch Junction. The branch led off to the south and was approached from the west.
The junction became quite developed with exchange sidings in the 'V' of the junction and the first portion of the branch double track. The signal box was located on the south side of the junction.
The junction closed in 1969 the closure of Knockshinnoch Castle Colliery.
The box closed in 1981.
The new Knockshinnoch Washery, for opencast coal, had the line re-open in 1985.
From 2003 this was the branch for the coal loading facility Greenburn Loading.
