This mill was on the west side of Bridge Street in Penicuik, on the north bank of the River North Esk. It was converted from a very long established corn mill into a paper mill by the owners of the Valleyfield Mill in 1803. It specialised in making paper for banknotes.
Thomas Telford's road and bridge over the North Esk date from 1812.
The mill was, from 1872, served by a siding of the Penicuik Railway. The siding ran round the south side of Penicuik station pass under Bridge Street to reach the mill from the east.
The siding was removed before closure of the railway in 1967. The mill closed in 1975. Some of the buildings survive, now in other uses. These are the last mill buildings in Penicuik (other than the much more modern Pomathorn Mill buildings).
