Bishopton No 1 Tunnel (1841-)

Opened on the Glasgow, Paisley and Greenock Railway.

Description

This double track tunnel is west of Bishopton. It is 330yds long. Bishopton No 2 Tunnel is just to the west.

Construction of the Bishopton Cutting and two tunnels was slow and difficult due to whinstone rock. The cutting is 2,300 yard long and required blasting.

The two tunnels together are referred to as Bishopton Tunnel - 770 yds long.
