This was a road metal quarry operated by Edinburgh's town council. It opened in 1826 and was expanded several times before closing in 1953 when further extension of the quarry was refused. The andesite quarried here was cracked and unsuitable for building use so found use for road material.
In the 1920s short tramways linked the rock cutting to rock crushers. Longer distance tramways had been refused permission.
After closure the quarry was partly filled with domestic waste.
Also known as Blackford Hill Quarry.
The site is famous for Agassiz's Rock.
