Name and dates

Bruichnain Loop (1870-1913)

Opened on the Inverness and Ross-shire Railway.

Description

This intermediate loop was installed between Bunchrew (to the west) and Clachnaharry (to the east) in 1902 to increase line capacity. There were two signal boxes, both on the south side of the line at either end of the loop. The box to the west was the 'north' box and to the east was the 'south' box.

Both boxes closed in 1913 when the line from Clachnaharry to Clunes via Bruichnain and Bunchrew was doubled.

The line remains open but has reverted to a single track in 1966. With the single track it is difficult to run an intensive service west out of Inverness, such as for regular commuter trains to Beauly, Muir of Ord, Conon Bridge, Dingwall and beyond.
