This was a double track masonry arch viaduct, only carrying one track, built over the Cander Water. On the site of the bridge is a road bridge carrying the A71.
The bridge carried the 1864 Stonehouse and Cots Castle branch of the Lesmahagow Railway. The branch opened to goods and minerals at first and passengers from 1866.
With the opening, in 1905, of the Mid Lanark Lines (Caledonian Railway) the link over the viaduct became redundant and was closed between Canderside Exchange Sidings and Stonehouse [Lanarkshire] in 1935.
The bridge was demolished by Royal Engineers as a training exercise in World War 2.
Later the road bridge on the same site was built.
